about the perfomance from the East Neuk Festival
"I caught the Pavel Haas Quartet on cracking form, performing Dvorak’s Quartet No 14, Op 105, as perhaps only Czechs can. Full of idiomatic nuances, the reading had a terrific intensity that boiled over into a finale that made Dvorak’s polyphony — which can sound laboured in less inspired hands — leap from the page. That, however, turned out to be just the warm-up to something even more epic: an interpretation of Beethoven’s Quartet in C, Op 59 No 3, in which the players seemed possessed with the same fierce guiding spirit from first to last. Rapport, intonation, understanding of the music: all superb."
